THE BOY WITH GREEN HAIR

     There once was a boy

               a boy with green hair

A beautiful sort of green that would make you think of

summer picnics in the meadow

rolling hills in faraway places

the beginning of a fresh spring morning

But the boy couldn't see it that way

                                    he felt
alone

different

odd

strange

He searched the world over to find a way to get rid of it

                     his unusual green hair

took decadent trips to forbidden places

wandered along empty streets full of people

lived all his days in the dark of night

hid his emotions inside til they scorched and burned

One twilight, as he lay slumped against the jagged edge of a steep cliff transfixed by the troubled ocean waves, he heard a muffled sound coming from somewhere in the rocks down below.

There,  wedged in a crevice between two large stones, was a small beautiful bird with an injured wing, unable to free itself.

He slowly and gently picked up the tiny helpless creature and took it home.

Day and night, he nursed the little bird back to health, keeping it warm next to his body, feeding it small bits of crumbs until it could swallow, patiently tending to the broken wing.

Soon the bird could fly again on its own--and one day the boy set it free.  The bird flew in and out of view for days, finally settling on the top of the highest tree in the forest.

As the boy watched the bird in flight, something  caught his eye...

it

sparkled

shimmered

glistened in the sun

it was coming from the top of the tree

Curious, he hurriedly struggled to climb up to the top

slipping backwards at times

clawing and grappling onto snapping branches

losing and regaining his footing over and over

until he finally reached the peak

Holding onto the highest branch, he peered over the tip to see what was creating this beautiful glow.....and then bent down to look even closer

      when suddenly he gasped

it was the finest nest made of

deep red berries

intricately woven twigs

and

brilliantly colored strands

of

his own

bright green hair
